MORE DOE TAGS FOR GASPORT HUNTERS

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) announced that more doe permits will be issued to hunters in several Wildlife Management Units (WMUs) beginning November 1, 2015.

Deer Management Permits (DMP), which allow hunters to harvest antlerless deer, are issued for specific WMUs to control deer populations. In order to provide DMPs at point-of-sale locations DEC must anticipate the number of applicants in each WMU and assign a probability to each unit in order to issue the appropriate number of permits. This year, DEC received fewer permit applications than projected in many WMUs.

In these units, DEC will reopen the DMP application process on a first-come, first-served basis. Hunters may apply for and receive up to two additional DMPs in these WMUs. Hunters may apply for leftover DMPs at any DEC license sales outlet beginning Nov. 1, 2015. Leftover DMPs will not be available by phone, by mail or via the internet. Applicants who previously paid the $10.00 DMP application fee or those that are exempt from the application fee will not be charged for this additional application.

Among the affected WMU's are 9A and 9F which include portions of Royalton and Hartland.

DEC CITES MILESTONE IN ROY-HART CLEAN-UP

The Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) announced today the completion of Phase 1 of the soil cleanup at the Royalton-Hartland (Roy-Hart) School property in Middleport, Niagara County. With approximately 12,000 cubic yards of arsenic-contaminated soil excavated from the Roy-Hart Field Hockey field in the southeast portion of the school property, restoration of this area is now complete.

"We are pleased with the progress that we have been able achieve this year," DEC Acting Commissioner Marc Gerstman said. "DEC worked cooperatively with the school to ensure the least disruption of school activities would occur."

The 2.5-acre remediation is part of the overall 14.4-acre remediation of the school property required under the FMC Corporation Site Final Statement of Basis (FSB) issued in May 2013. The 2013 FSB requires the removal of arsenic contamination exceeding the 20 parts per million soil cleanup objective from the Roy-Hart School property.

DEC officials worked with the Roy-Hart Board of Education and school district officials to develop a construction schedule and the field hockey area will be available for use beginning in the spring.

Work also started last week on Phase 2 of the cleanup. The DEC, in consultation with the NYS Department of Health, is conducting removal and disposal of arsenic-contaminated soil at three of the 182 residential properties in the Village of Middleport identified for cleanup pursuant to the FSB.

This initial removal will be followed by additional work in the spring 2016 to address the remaining properties in the K and M block area for which designs are currently underway. DEC intends to continue this cleanup until it addresses all properties for which homeowners have provided consent.

Additional information regarding the FMC Middleport facility cleanup may be found on DEC's website.

GASPORT FACEBOOK PAGES

In the left column of our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/gasportnewyork) is a section called "liked by this page". In that section I've tried to collect all of the Gasport based businesses and organizations that are on Facebook, which in turn allows you to find them all in one place and then like them to keep abreast of what's happening in our community. If I missed a Facebook page let me know. I'm pretty specific in my requirements, though, and that organization has to be truly Gasport based or Gasport focused.

ACCIDENT AT SLAYTON & HARTLAND

With the fall harvest and entertainment season underway at Becker Farms the local roads are busy (which is a GREAT thing for the Royalton-Hartland economy). But, with it comes the occasional accident at Slayton Settlement and Hartland Roads, as tourists often wrongly believe that it's a four-way stop...as was the case yesterday. So, be careful when traveling near that intersection.

Here are photos of the accident from local photographer Adam Hudson:

ORGANIC GARDENING & COMPOSTING SEMINAR

The secret to next year’s perfect garden may be this year’s preparation. Karen Cavanaugh, a Master Gardener from Cornell Cooperative Extension, will be at the Royalton Hartland Community Library Community Room on Wednesday, October 14 at 7 p.m. to share her expertise on organic gardening and composting.

While organic gardening does not involve the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, Cavanaugh’s program will show gardeners that organic gardening doesn’t mean plants are left to fend for themselves. She will explain the tools available to organic gardeners to help them fight off pests and grow healthy plants and produce.

She will also offer information about composting to add nutrient-rich materials to fuel plant growth and vitality to your garden soil. Composting not only creates rich soil for your lawn or garden, but it is free, easy to do and good for the environment.

The Organic Gardening and Composting program will provide both information and offer participants the opportunity to ask Cavanaugh questions. This program, sponsored by the library, is one of the many programs offered to home gardeners and professional horticulturalists by the Cornell Cooperative Extension in Niagara County.

Anyone interested in this free educational program sponsored by the Friends of the Library can register online at www.RoyHartCommunityLibrary.com, by stopping by the library at 9 South Vernon Street, or by calling (716) 735-3281.

The Royalton Hartland Community Library offers a wide variety of programs and   services to local residents throughout the year. For more information please call or visit the library.
