ROY-HART'S STATEMENT ON SOIL REMEDIATION

On June 19, 2015, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) began excavation on Phase 1 of the soil remediation at the Royalton-Hartland (Roy-Hart) School Property. This soil removal is being conducted to remove arsenic contaminated soil associated with the FMC Corporation Site (FMC Site) located adjacent to the School Property. In May 2013, the NYSDEC issued a Statement of Basis associated with the FMC Site requiring cleanup of the Roy-Hart School Property where arsenic concentrations in the soil exceed the cleanup objective of 20 parts per million.

In early 2015 the NYSDEC worked with the Roy-Hart school district to identify the first phase of the cleanup. It was decided that the 2.6 acre JV field hockey field area located in the southeastern portion of the school property would be the first area addressed. On April 13, 2015 the Roy-Hart Board of Education voted to approve the remediation of the School property.

To date, the NYSDEC has removed over 11,000 cubic yards of contaminated soil. Excavation will be completed by September 4, 2015. Backfilling and restoration activities, consisting of backfilling the excavation area, properly grading the field for drainage and installing sod are currently ongoing. Final restoration returning the area to its current configuration as a field hockey field will be completed by the end of September 2015. The fields are expected to be ready for use in the fall of 2016.

WATCH FOR BOGUS BOOSTERS

The Roy-Hart Sports Boosters posted the following message on their Facebook page...

There have been reports of students going door to door around the Cottage Rd. area collecting donations for the Roy-Hart Sports Boosters Club. WE DO NOT HAVE ANY STUDENTS WORKING FOR US SOLICITING FUNDS DOOR TO DOOR. Middleport police, Sheriffs deptartmentt as well as the NY State troopers have ALL been notified about this occurrence. I know the FOOTBALL TEAM IS SELLING DISCOUNT CARDS door to door. These individuals were strictly collecting money and giving nothing in return. They didn't possess any cards or receipts. PLEASE PASS THIS ALONG.

WKBW REPORT ON THE DUMPED DOG

WKBW (channel 7) news ran a story last night about the dumped dog that has captured the hearts of Gasport residents (and all Western New Yorkers for that matter).  For all of the evil that it takes to dump a dog roadside in a garbage bag, think about all the good in this story -- the report highlights the young heroine Malory Steiner (who checked on the garbage bag), her family (who initially cared for the dog) and Buffalo Pug and Small Breed Rescue (who have now taken on caring for "Teddy"). Watch the report here...

MISSING DOG IN GASPORT

STATUS OF THE DOG THAT WAS DUMPED ON MOUNTAIN ROAD

Many are wondering what the status is of the little dog that was dumped on Mountain Road in a garbage bag.

Buffalo Pug & Small Breed Rescue, Inc. have been in contact with Royalton's Dog Control officer Scott and will be picking up the dog on Wednesday night.

The dog is missing some teeth, has cataracts and some kind of skin condition. He is emaciated and has obviously been neglected for some time.

He will need vetting ASAP and Buffalo Pug & Small Breed Rescue, Inc. could use some donations to get this guy back on his feet. You will find a donation link on their website at buffalopugs.org. or their PayPal link rescue@buffalopugs.org.

GENEALOGIST TO SPEAK AT LIBRARY

Thanks to a grant from the New York State Educations Department, the Ancestry Library Edition (Ancestry LE)  now available at the Royalton Hartland Community Library. Now many local folks are trying to discover their family roots. This online service provides individuals the most comprehensive resource for discovering their roots, but one may not know where to start.

Thanks to Genealogist Lou Omel, that task may be a bit easier. Omel, a  consultant from the Family History Center in Williamsville, will be at the Royalton Hartland Community Library on Monday, August 24 at 7 p.m. with an informal presentation entitled “Climbing Your Family Tree”. It will focus on how to use the online database available at Ancestry LE to research your family background. It will be followed by a question and answer period.

When the library is open, patrons can access Ancestry LE from one of the library’s public computers or from their own devices using the library’s Wi-Fi connection. Omel will be explaining how to use this online resource effectively.

Anyone attending the August 24 program with a special interest such as specific countries of origin, the military, local history, the Civil War, etc. can let the library know when they register.

As space is limited, it is advised to register for this program by calling the library at 716-735-3281.

The Royalton Hartland Community Library provides residents a wide variety of programs and materials that can be found on the library’s website at www.RoyHartCommunityLibrary.com .

MEDINA TAKES AIM AT TRI-TOWN

Occasionally, Medina is dispatched to assist Niagara County fire and EMS with calls. They are now looking to get something out of it and, in this article that appeared in the Daily News, have even suggested they would try to take over Tri-Town Ambulance's territory, something that can't be allowed to happen. We will keep you posted as this story develops.
