LIBRARY TO OFFER TRAINING FOR E-GADGETS

If you have questions about your e-reader, Smart Phone, computer or any other electronic device, bring them to the Gadgets and Gear Session at the Royalton Hartland Community Library. It will be held on Thursday, January 30 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Not only can residents learn how to use them but they can also see how to download the free e-books from the NIOGA library system’s online service called Overdrive, learn how to use Freegal, the free music download service or get access to a large number of free magazines on the new service Zinio.

Sara Taylor, an e-mobile trainer from the NIOGA Library System's BTOP Express, will be at the library to answer questions and show how to use just about any electronic device on an individual, walk-in basis. “It’s a great opportunity to get your questions answered and practice what you have just learned,” says Rose Bernard, Library Director. “Sara is wonderful and has the knack for making learning easy.”

Bring your own Kindle, Nook, iPad, flash drive, laptop or other electronic devices (including your charging cords) and ask questions about them. You will be able to download items from Overdrive, Freegal or Zinio right at the session so you will know how to do it on your own.

The Royalton Hartland Community Library periodically offers sessions like Gadgets and Gear and residents are encouraged to check the library’s website at www.RoyHartCommunityLibrary.com for program information or you can call the library at 735-3281.

ROY-HART'S AID DROPS

The Governor released his 2013-2014 executive budget earlier this week. Statewide, there is a 3.8% increase in school aid. How does Roy-Hart fare? If his proposal holds true, our district will see a $361,837 or 3.31% drop in school aid.

To see how the other districts fared, here is his budget proposal regarding school runs. Be aware that before using up all your phone/internet data allocation, the PDF document is very large (88 pages):

NEW COMPUTER STATION UP & RUNNING AT LIBRARY

Now that a new computer and Internet station is up and running at the Royalton Hartland Community Library, it’s a perfect time to stop by and learn more about Zinio. Zinio is a free magazine service that library patrons can sign up for to access a huge selection of popular magazines on their electronic devices at no charge.

According to Library Director Rose Bernard, “With Zinio, patrons can enjoy the convenience of reading digital editions of their favorite magazines. They can check out as many editions as they want and there are no holds or due dates. There is no fee for this service which patrons can sign up for with their library card.”

“I think what is appealing to many is that you can read your favorite magazines anytime, anywhere on your computer, iPad, E-reader or even a Smart Phone,” adds Ellen Gagne, Youth Librarian at the library. “It’s very easy to sign up but we would like to make it even easier. We are inviting patrons in to sign up with our help. Just stop by and we can use one of the computers at our new computer station to get them started with the Zinio magazine service,” says Gagne.

“And if someone would like to sign up at home, there are also step-by-step directions on the library’s website at www.RoyHartCommunityLibrary.com under the tab on the homepage that says ‘Our Services’.  Below that is a page entitled ‘All About Zinio’.  A handbook for users in pdf format is also available to download from that page.”

After patrons sign up for Zinio using their library card, they can access the digital magazine service at any time and download magazines to read on their own devices at their convenience.

The new computer work station and chairs at the Royalton Hartland Community Library was donated by local resident Ellen Hammond Ryan. “With our high speed wireless Internet service, we are seeing a great deal of computer use on a daily basis. If you don’t have a home computer or access to the Internet, the library is the place to be,” says Bernard. “We are very pleased to have four computers and our Wi-Fi is on 24/7.”

For more information, please call 716-735-3281, or visit the Royalton Hartland Community Library at 9 Vernon St., Middleport, NY, or find more information on the library’s website at www.RoyHartCommunityLibrary.com.
