ROY-HART GRAD TO PRESENT RECITAL

Soprano Sydney Anderson, a 2008 graduate of Roy-Hart, recognized by the National Association of Teachers of Singing as one of America’s brightest new vocal talents, presents her first WNY recital at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Lockport United Church of Christ, 98 East Ave., Lockport.

VETERANS GRAVE MARKERS STOLEN

Sometime between August and earlier this month, someone stole at least 40 veterans grave markers from the Hartland Cemetery, 8541 Ridge Road, according to a report filed with the Niagara County Sheriff's Office.

3-YEAR OLD WALKS ACROSS ROUTE 31; PARENTS CHARGED

A Lincoln Drive couple was charged Sunday with child endangerment after Niagara County Sheriff's deputies say their three-year-old son crossed Rochester Road to the Dollar General unsupervised wearing only a pair of underwear.

It's truly heartbreaking to hear of such a thing.

GASPORT SEES POPULATION DECLINE

The U.S. Census Bureau has released new population figures for all cities, towns and villages across the country.

Royalton had a population of 7,660 that dropped to 7,582. That's a loss of 78 people or a 1% decline.

Hartland went from 4,117 to 4,054 residents. That's a loss of 63 people or a 1.6% decline.

Middleport went from 1,840 to 1,806, a loss of 34 people or a 1.8% decline.

VOTERS APPROVE ROY-HART BUDGET

Roy-Hart voters overwhelmingly approved the district's $22,363,886 budget today, with 280 voting in favor of it and 102 voting against.

ROY-HART LIBRARY BOOK SALE

Avid readers are hereby given notice of the upcoming Used Book Sale at the Royalton Hartland Community Library, 9 Vernon Street in Middleport, on Saturday, May 24 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Readers can stock up on hardcover books for $1,  large paperback books at $ .50 and small paperbacks and children’s books for only $ .25.

The Used Book Sale is followed by the popular $2 a Bag Book Sale that will take place Monday, May 26. Books that have been donated will be available for an amazing $2 bag from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The library’s book sales are a great opportunity for readers to get some good reads at great prices. These book sales, sponsored by the Friends of the Library, are held twice a year at the Royalton Hartland Community Library.

The sales feature books for all ages as well as a limited number of previously used games and puzzles. Most of these items sold during these book sales are donated by residents for someone else to read and enjoy along with a small number of outdated or discarded materials from the library’s shelves.

A number of themed gift baskets are on display at the library. Raffle tickets for the baskets can be purchased for $1 each or 6 for $5 at the library. The baskets will be raffled off by the Friends of the Library Monday, May 26 at 2 p.m.

POLICE LOOKING FOR MISSING/RUNAWAY MIDDLEPORT TEEN

 The Niagara County Sheriff's Office is asking for help in locating a 14-year-old girl who is believed to have run away from her home in Middleport.

The sheriff's office says Lisa Helsdon has friends in the Niagara Falls area, and may be in the vicinity of North Avenue and 39th Street in the city.

Helsdon is described as a 5-foot 4-inch white female weighing 120 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes.

Anyone with information regarding Helsdon's location is asked to call the Niagara County Sheriff's Office at 716-438-3393.

MAIER IS PRESENTED HER AWARD

Haley Maier, 11, of Gasport was named one of New York State’s top two youth volunteers of the year by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards. The program operates nationwide in an effort to honor youths who go above and beyond when they volunteer.

HARTLAND UMC BBQ


CLEAN UP GASPORT

The annual "Clean Up Gasport" event is this Saturday, May 3rd. The Gasport Beautification Committee and all interested volunteers will be meeting at 9 am at the Zion Lutheran Church. The last few years, with help from the community, they have finished cleaning up the hamlet in less than two hours. Garbage bags, gloves, water and coffee will be provided. Please come out and help. The committee welcomes all volunteers!

The Medina Journal-Register has for 111 years been a go-to news source for Orleans County and folks in the eastern end of the towns of Royalton and Hartland. We will see the last edition of that paper at the end of this month. Sad.
