The relatively-new Sunrise Cafe was not safe from thieves Monday night. They broke in and stole the cash register, but as you'll read in this Buffalo News report, it didn't get too far...

BOOK CLUB TO DISCUSS MERYL STREEP MOVIE CLUB

The members of the Royalton Hartland Library Book Club will be discussing the unusual connection between three women and movies starring Meryl Streep at their Monday, February 11 meeting at 7 p.m. in the upstairs meeting room at the library, 9 Vernon Street in Middleport.

The Royalton Hartland Book Club meets monthly to discuss selected literary works and they welcome other interested readers to join to share their ideas and opinions.

The aunt, who is now their charge, has them join her in her weekly movie night and their lives begin to change as they watch the movies that star Meryl Streep.

Interested readers are invited to attend this month’s meeting, or any of the future meetings at the library, which are posted online at www.royhartcommunitylibrary.com

ROY-HART MAY SEE INCREASE IN STATE FUNDS

Earlier this week, Governor Andrew Cuomo unveiled his 2013-2014 state budget. His version -- which will undoubtedly be tweaked by the state legislature -- shows a 4.4% increase in state "aid" to school districts. Roy-Hart is projected to receive an increase slightly lower than the state average. If adopted, the school portion of the state budget will give Roy-Hart $10,096,234 -- a spike of 4.08% versus the current fiscal year.

NIAGARA METALS CUSTOMER APPRECIATION DAYS

100 MILE MARATHON TO GO THROUGH GASPORT THIS WEEKEND

In a few days you'll see a sight along the Erie Canal that you're not used to seeing during the frigid winter: Runners -- and many of them -- competing against one another and Mother Nature on the towpath.

Long-distance runners from across Western New York and places far away will be converging on our area for a 100-mile run on January 26th and 27th. Called the "Beast of Burden 100 Miler and 24 Ultra Marathon," it is an event organized by Lockport runner Sam Pasceri that will have runners go from Widewaters in Lockport to Middleport and back...twice.

This will be a grueling event! 100 miles is tough. 100 miles in arctic weather...that's even tougher!

Saturday's high is forecasted to be 15 degrees...with overnight lows of 8.

BEWARE OF ERRORS ON RECYCLING MAILER

In yesterday's mail all Royalton residents should have received a glossy flier from Modern Recycling.

It's not junk mail -- make sure you read it and keep it, too, for future reference. It tells you what can go in the new totes which all residents should have by Wednesday and it features a calendar that tells you when you are supposed to put the totes roadside (the town is split into half and residents see pick-up every other week).

There is an error with the mailer, though!

THREE times on the mailer it says that pick-up begins on Wednesday, February 6th with A residents and B residents see pick-up on Wednesday, February 13th.

BUT, if you look at the calendar, it says the opposite.

I contacted town supervisor Jennifer Bieber regarding this and she said the calendar takes precedence.

So, ignore the date announcements located throughout the document and focus on the calendar. That means modified recycling pick-up begins on February 6th with B residents while the A residents see their first pick-up on the 13th.

RECYCLING TOTES ON THEIR WAY!

A message from Royalton town supervisor Jennifer Bieber....

Starting tomorrow, Friday, January 11 through next Wednesday, January 16, all Royalton Residents outside the Village of Middleport will be receiving a 64 gallon black tote with a red lid for recycling. Inside the cart will be an in mold label that will give information explaining all the materials that can and can not be placed into this container. You should also receive something in the mail this week that will will give you a schedule of the weeks your road will be placing the recycling totes out to the road. Recycling will now be every other week, but our pick up day will still be on Wednesdays.

When totes are distributed, if you know your neighbor is on vacation, please take a moment to move their carts to a safe place on their property. If you would like more information on our new Town Wide Recycling, Modern Recycling will be hosting an open house at Royalton Town Hall, 5316 Royalton Center Rd, Middleport this Saturday, January 12, from 9:00 AM to Noon. Hope to see you there!
