ROY-HART'S PREPAREDNESS FOR A NEWTOWN-TYPE EVENT

Saturday's Lockport paper looked at how local police departments and school districts would be prepared if, God forbid, a Newtown-style massacre happened locally.

Here's what the paper reported about Royalton-Hartland's preparation:

Roy-Hart had a drill at the end of the year in June. The entire school was evacuated, with the middle school and high school students going to the church and the elementary children going to the fire hall for dismissal. Parents picked them up there.

Every day, there’s a lockout at the schools. The entrances are locked during the day and parents and visitors have to buzz to get permission to enter the school.

”We don’t what to have to do those things,” (Superintendent) MacDonald said. “We want to be warm and welcoming to kids and parents and community. Nobody ever thinks it can happen here.”
