The Town of Hartland takes this opportunity to honor and remember our military service members that paid the ultimate sacrifice so that we may live free. Please take time this Memorial Day to remember and give thanks. We honor the residents from the Town of Hartland that did not return home.

Capt. Benjamin Foote, Company E 8th Cavalry killed during the battle of Brandy Station June 9th, 1863
Lt. Carlos S. Smith, Company E 8th NY Cavalry killed at broad Run Virginia During the Bristoe Virginia Campaign October 14th, 1863

Served together in the 24th NY Independent Battery
They were captured and spent time in a southern prisoner of war camp.
Their headstone reads “A victim to rebel starvation”
