Becca's Closet prom dress giveaway: March 23rd
Do you have family members or neighbors in financial need who might find it difficult to send their daughter to the prom this spring?
There is help available this Saturday. Read on...
Becca's Closet was created as a legacy to Rebecca Kirtman and the project she created prior to her passing in 2003. Becca's Closet donates formal attire to high school girls with financial need who otherwise would not be able to attend their schools' military balls, homecomings and proms. Their mission is to continue her vision and dream of helping others. You can learn about Becca's Closet here: http://www.beccascloset.org/
Paula Travis and the Women Helping Others organization at Zion Lutheran Church in Gasport opened a chapter of Becca's Closet in 2015 and they have literally hundreds of slightly used or new prom dresses to distribute at NO COST to girls in need in the area.
They will be distributing the dresses from Zion Lutheran Church this Saturday, March 23rd from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
If you have any question, please contact Paula at ladytinny559@gmail.com or 716.4716446.
This is yet another example of the excellent local missions conducted by the good people at Zion.

Brauer is Advisor of the Year!
A huge and much deserved congratulations to Orleans/Niagara BOCES’ Project Based Engineering teacher, Scott Brauer. Scott, who teaches at the Niagara Career and Technical Education Center, has been named the SkillsUSA New York Area 1 Advisor of the Year!
SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce.
His journey began when he was a junior in high school and attending BOCES. He says being a member of SkillsUSA gave him direction, purpose and focus. It is one of the reasons he decided to become a career and technical education teacher at the same center he attended and become a SkillsUSA advisor himself. “I just want others to experience what I was able to experience as a student. SkillsUSA is life changing!”
Scott has been a SkillsUSA advisor for 28 years. He has been the lead advisor at the Niagara Career and Technical Education Center for the past 12 years and believes in order to be a great advisor you have to become involved through ardent practice, gathering of information and networking. He trains others not to do things for the young people, but to assist them on their journey. He coordinates all the competitions that the center participates in at the regional, state and national levels. He is also the contest chair for Advanced Manufacturing Technology, CNC and Machining contests at the regional level. His class has been recognized by the NYS Education Department as a Top Career and Technical Education Program in New York State.
He was nominated by his peers across the Area 1 division. One nominator says, “Young people are always the center of Scott’s decisions and plans. He is forever mindful of any action’s impact on the individual or the group. He is always moving forward, taking others with him into the future and the world beyond his classroom.” His nomination also says, “Scott is known for many things: his generosity, his selflessness, his devotion to his wife and family, his belief in God, his role as a teacher and mentor, his love for his students and young people, his work ethic, his love of everything outdoors and his involvement with SkillsUSA.”

Hartland accident and outage
Hartland, NY - On March 8th, 2019, at 1123 hours, the Niagara County Sheriff's Office responded to the intersection of Ridge and Hosmer Roads for a vehicle that struck a utility pole.
Investigation revealed that the vehicle was traveling eastbound on Ridge Road when it exited the roadway, continuing eastbound through a yard on the south side of the roadway. The vehicle then struck and severed a utility pole causing a loss of power in the immediate area. National Grid responded to the scene in order to de-energize power lines that were preventing access to the vehicle and injured driver.
The driver, who was the lone occupant, was transported to ECMC by ambulance for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
Initial investigation into the incident suggested that it was caused by a medical issue suffered by the driver.
At this time, Ridge Road has been reopened and National Grid is working to restore power in the area. Investigation by the Niagara County Sheriff's Office into the incident is continuing.

CAP looking for new members
The Middleport Community Advisory Panel (CAP) this year is seeking new, qualified members who want to be involved in their community, learn more about the FMC Middleport plant, and provide feedback to the plant.
Established more than two decades ago as a concept of the American Chemistry Council’s Responsible Care Program, the Middleport CAP meets five times a year to provide open and honest communication between the FMC plant and the Middleport community on the plant and its operations in such areas as safety, environmental performance, employment, community involvement, emergency preparedness and response.
Previous meeting topics have fostered discussion on health, safety, environmental concerns, emergency response, products, economy, and education.
“Members of the CAP help the plant’s leadership to better understand the community’s perspectives and concerns, and FMC Middleport in turn helps the community to better understand the facility and its operations,” said Jessica Heideman, CAP facilitator and FMC community liaison.
“These regular meetings help ensure the voice of the community is heard and provides yet another way for FMC to work directly with the community around the plant,” she said. “FMC looks forward to meeting with the new and returning members of the CAP team throughout 2019 and beyond.”
CAP members are all community residents from various walks of life including, but not limited to, parents, teachers, law enforcement, business professionals, students, and retirees. CAP members serve a three-year term on the panel.
To be considered for CAP membership, please contact Jessica Heideman by visiting the FMC Community Office, 8 S. Vernon St., Middleport, NY 14105, by calling (716) 735-9769, or by emailing her at jessica.heideman@fmc.com.
