SERIOUS ACCIDENT IN GASPORT

There was a serious accident today in Gasport at the intersection of Orangeport and Slayton Settlement Roads. At approximately 8:30 this morning, a dump truck and car collided. The dump truck rolled over onto the car, trapping the driver within.

As details become available from authorities and news outlets, we will post the information here (updating this specific post).

As of 9:30 AM the intersection remains closed for both HazMat and investigation. The investigation will continue for a few hours, so choose an alternate travel route.

Here is Channel 4's initial report (9:44 AM) with a photo of the scene. You will notice that the title of the photo says "fatal". The death of a driver or passenger cannot be confirmed at this time:

At 10:05 AM, the Twitter accounts for WIVB news and their reporter Brittni Smallwood are reporting that it was a fatality.

Channel 4's report was updated at 10:01 AM, indicating a woman died in the crash. She had been driving on Orangeport Road. the dump truck was driving on Slayton Settlement:

1:55 PM: News outlets are reporting that the initial investigation by the Sheriff's Office shows the driver of the SUV was at fault -- the driver passed the ‘stop’ sign or failed to yield upon stopping.

Press Release - Fatal Car Accident ROYALTON, NY - ON THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 7TH, 2013 THE NIAGARA COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE RECEIVED NUMEROUS 911 CALLS REPORTING AN INJURY ACCIDENT AT THE INTERSECTION OF SLAYTON SETTLEMENT AND ORANGEPORT ROADS. UPON ARRIVAL BY DEPUTIES, IT WAS DETRMINED THAT A SOUTHBOUND CAR TRAVELING ON ORANGEPORT ROAD FAILED TO STOP FOR A STOP SIGN AT SLAYTON SETTLEMENT ROAD. THE VEHICLE ENTERED THE INTERSECTION AND WAS STRUCK BY AN EASTBOUND DUMP TRUCK. AFTER IMPACT, BOTH VEHICLES WENT OFF OF THE ROADWAY STRIKING A TREE THAT WAS LOCATED ON THE SOUTHEAST CORNER OF THE INTERSECTION. A FEMALE OCCUPANT IN THE VEHICLE WAS PRONOUNCED DECEASED AT THE SCENE. THE DRIVER OF THE DUMP TRUCK WAS TRANSPORTED TO EASTERN NIAGARA HOSPITAL-LOCKPORT FOR MINOR INJURIES. THE INVESTIGATION IS CONTINUING BY THE NCSO ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION UNIT. THE NAMES OF THE VICTIMS ARE NOT BEING RELEASED AT THIS TIME.
