The Hartland United Methodist Church on Ridge Road in Gasport will be having a pancake and sausage dinner from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM on Tuesday, the 12th. This dinner is open to the public.
This is in celebration of Shrove Tuesday -- more commonly known as "Pancake Tuesday" or "Fat Tuesday", the day before Ash Wednesday and the start of Lent.
Pancakes are associated with the day because they were a way to use up rich foods such as eggs, milk, and sugar, before the fasting season of the 40 days of Lent. The liturgical fasting emphasized eating plainer food and refraining from food that would give pleasure: In many cultures, this means no meat, dairy, or eggs.
