The Lockport paper is reporting today that Mr. Nasal -- who taught at Roy-Hart during my parent's era (the 1960's and early 1970's) -- passed away a week and a half ago...
Joseph Robert Nasal died at Huntington Living Center in Waterloo, NY on
December 19, 2012. His memorial Mass will be held on a future date.
Joe
was born in Lackawanna, NY in 1918, the son of John and Mary Nasal. He
attended Our Lady of Victory High School and then Canisius College in
Buffalo on a full basketball scholarship.
With the advent of WW II, he
joined the Army Air Force in 1942. He married Margaret Herg in 1944 in
Louisiana before being sent to the European war front. His 397th
division followed General Patton's Third Army above the troops, where he
was a top turret gunner in a B-26 and flew most of his 42 missions in
the "Little Lady". He was promoted to Technical Sergeant with five
stripes and returned home from Europe in July of 1945.
