DONATIONS STRENGHTEN COMMUNITY LIBRARY

The Royalton Hartland Community Library recently received a donation in honor of Betty W. Querns from her family for books to memorialize her love for family and her years of service at the library

Betty Querns of Middleport felt strongly about family and the joys of motherhood. When she passed away on May 3 of this year, her family decided to share her interests with the community in a special way. Her family donated several books in her name to the Royalton Hartland Community Library.

“As Betty had worked at the library for a number of years, the family felt that donating books on topics that Betty loved would be a wonderful way to remember her,” says Rose Bernard, Library Director.

“Her family donated the hardcover editions of ‘I Already Know I Love You’ by Billy Crystal; ‘When a Child is Born, So is a Grandmother’ by Mary Engelbreit; ‘Grandmother's Book of Promises’ by Karen Hill; ‘I Loved You Before You Were Born’ by Anne Bowen; ‘Mother’s Song’ adapted by Elliot Greene; and ‘Momma Will You?’ by Dori Chaconas.

The library places a placard inside the cover of each book or DVD in memory of the person whose family or friends have made the donation. They also send a note to let the family know about it. “Families tell us that it is a great comfort when we notify them that a donation to the library has been made in their loved one’s name,” Bernard adds.

Bernard advises families that it is best to make a monetary donation for a specific book title or a topic as a memorial rather than bringing in new books. “The book may already be on the shelf. If we do have that book title, we would then be able to add a new book to our collection that we don’t currently have for the whole Royalton Hartland community to read and enjoy.”
