GOVERNOR'S BUDGET TO CUT SCHOOL AID

Yesterday New York Governor David Paterson issued his tentative budget for the 2010-2011 fiscal year. One of his biggest cuts is in school aid, in which he hopes to trim some $1.1 billion.

Royalton-Hartland is facing the biggest cut by percentage in Niagara County. The district is slated to receive $11.9 million in state aid, down about 10.5 percent from the $13.3 million it received for this school year. Superintendent Kevin MacDonald said some creative money management was going to be needed in order to come up with a budget. MacDonald is working on his first budget as Roy-Hart superintendent; he began in July 2009.

“We’ve got some work ahead of us,” MacDonald said. “We’re going to scrutinize everything from programs to reserves.”
