ERIE CANAL SONGWRITING CONTEST

The Erie Canal was an important part of Gasport's history and to this day remains important to tourism and recreation. Does the Canal move you? Are you a talented musician and songwriter?

The Erie Canal Discovery Center and the Niagara County Historical Society are sponsoring a songwriting contest for original songs about the Erie Canal. All genres of music are accepted. Entries will be judged on originality and content, and must contain references to the Erie Canal, the locks or Lockport.

Entry forms and rules can be obtained at the Historical Society, 215 Niagara St., Lockport or on line at www.niagarahistory.org. While on the Web site, listen to last year’s winning entry by songwriter and musician, Patrick Gordon, who wrote, “Down on the Erie Canal.” The 2008 winning entry, Doc Stuart’s “The Ballad of the Lockport Locks,” can also be heard on the site.

The deadline for contest entries is April 1. All submissions should be postmarked by that date.
