CLAMBAKE & PULLED PORK AT COVENANT

Covenant United Church of Christ on Main Street will be hosting a clambake and pulled pork dinner from 4 to 7 this Saturday, the 21st.

Dinners are one dozen clams or a pulled pork sandwich with baked beans, corn on the cob, dessert and a drink. Clam dinners are $12 and you can buy an extra dozen clams for $7. Pork dinners cost $8.

Pre-sale tickets can be obtained by calling 772-7802; leave a name and phone number and someone will return the call.

A basket raffle will be held, too.

PRESCHOOL STORY HOUR

As the school-aged children head back to school, a new set of stories and themes are ready for the pre-school aged children to enjoy at the Royalton Hartland Community Library.

Preschool Story Hour is a great way to introduce young children to the joys of reading, meet new friends and learn about the world around them.

Fall’s bounty and the harvest season are the focus of this season’s hour-long sessions. They include Pumpkins on September 19; Johnny Appleseed Day on September 26; Lots of Leaves on October 3; Acorns for Squirrels on October 10; Spider Webs on October 17; Costumes and Camouflage on October 24; and a celebration of Halloween will top off the fall season on October 31.

Pre-school Story Hour is held every Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the library, 9 Vernon Street in Middleport in the upstairs meeting room.

Children aged 2, 3 and 4 are invited to attend and enjoy this great introduction to the world of books.

BECKER FARMS' PUMPKIN FIESTA

For every weekend now through October, Becker Farms will be having their annual Pumpkin Fiesta, making Gasport the most happening community in all of Western New York!

The dates are as follows...

September 21, 22, 28, 29
October 5, 6, 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, 26, 27

Here's the rundown from Becker Farms....

This is a terrific way to celebrate the harvest season! The great Pumpkin Fiesta is a fun family activity that the kids will remember and want to return to year after year. The Fiesta is every Saturday and Sunday from mid-September to the end of October. Free Live music from 1pm to 4pm. Wine tasting $2 and beer tasting $5 Food available in the cantina and cafe. Enjoy food from the frier as well as our famous chicken bbq &  ribs!

All events are weather permitting

-Hillbilly Bob's "Pig Rock Derby" Pig Races with music, laughter, and prizes for the whole family. shows at 12pm, 2pm and 4pm

CONCORD STOMP

Vizcarra Vineyards - Becker Farms will be hosting their 8th annual Concord Stomp grape stomping contest this Saturday, September 21st at 2:00. Registration closed on September 9th, but it's a sight-to-see for non-participants.

FRIEND FEST


Chris Kelley recently started an endeavor to restore and recreate tractors, engines and sprayers that were manufactured by Friend Mfg. Co., which once was a very large manufacturer in Gasport.

In celebration of Friend and other antique farm equipment, Chris and Becker Farms are hosting Friend Fest on September 28th. 

Among the highlights is an antique tractor ride that will lead a procession of tractors from Becker Farms to Gasport View Dairy on Mountain Road and back.


ROY-HART'S FOOTBALL GAME AT LEW-PORT

The Roy-Hart/Barker football squad fell to Lew-Port 30-16 this past weekend. This You Tube video shows all the plays without boredom between them...

HUNTER EDUCATION COURSES

Hunting and the art of providing all-natural nourishment for our families is an important part of the culture in our community. The fall is a good time to introduce someone to the sport with numerous hunting seasons soon underway, like rabbit, turkey, and -- the most popular -- deer. There are 2 hunter education courses coming up in Gasport if you're looking to get someone licensed for the first time:

The first course will be held September 16th, 18th, and 20th from 6:00pm till 9:30pm each night at the Hartland Conservation Club on Orangeport Rd.

You must pre-register. Call Walt or Margo at 716.778.5288 after 4:00pm. Class size is limited to 40 students. You must attend all sessions.

There will also be a course offered on October 14th, 16th, and 18th from 6:00 till 10:00 each night at Little Ridge Archery (Alvord's) at 8862 Ridge Rd. Gasport.

You must pre-register. Call Roy and Nancy at 716.772.7598 between 1:00pm and 8:00pm only. Class size is limited to 35 students. You may bring a beverage. You must attend all sessions.

JOHNNY APPLSEED FESTIVAL

The annual Johnny Appleseed festival will take place September 7th & 8th and September 14th & 15th at Becker Farms. They will have u-pick apples, hayrides, pony rides, music by the Good Ole Boys  and a chicken BBQ. For more info, visit www.BeckerFarms.com 

CONSERVATION DAY

To celebrate the Hartland Conservationists Club’s 80th Anniversary, they’re holding a Conservation Day event on Saturday, September 7th at their facility on Orangeport Road. Some of the activities include a chicken chowder sale, Chinese basket auction, bake goods sale, line dancing presentation, fishing and wildlife programs, NCFCC shooting trailer along with vendors and other demonstrations. The event runs from 9:00 till 4:00.

EASE THE TAX GROWTH ON NEW YORK'S FARMERS

Agriculture is far and away the biggest sector of the economy in the towns of Royalton and Hartland. Our farmers face some major inequity when attempting to compete globally because of the property tax structure in New York. My column for this week's newspapers looks at this and asks that the Governor sign a bill (that has passed both houses) that would put a cap on assessments of agricultural land. SEPTEMBER HISTORICAL SOCIETY MEETING

The Historical Societies of the towns of Lockport and Royalton will have their Annual Pot Luck Dinner and Program at 5:00 PM on Monday, Sept. 16th, at the Pomeroy School on Lower Mountain and Leete Road, 3/4 mile west of the County Jail.

Members are asked to bring a dish to pass, and their own dinnerware -- Hot Dogs, rolls and soft drinks will be furnished.

After dinner, Gerry Stafford will talk about her book -- "Young Canaller".

Anyone interested in Local History is invited to attend, and New Members are always welcome. They meet (8) times a year, between Lockport and Royalton, and the more members they have, the better the programs they can put on.
