Why is it called Chemical Hose?

Why is the fire company called Gasport Chemical Hose?

At Saturday's centennial celebration one of the longtime firemen told this story as it was told to him:
The early Gasport firefighters had a portable tank, pulled by horse or man -- that era's makeshift "fire truck". It was filled with baking soda and vinegar to one) create a fire extinguishing compound and two) to build up pressure through a chemical reaction to push water.

One day, the tank was filled with too much of it and the tank exploded because of the pressure build up.

The firemen found humor in their mistake and made Chemical Hose a part of the name to honor that error. It stuck forever, even as firefighting technology and public waters systems improved and the founders passed on.

Gasport's fire's 100th

Here's an excellent write-up about Gasport's installation dinner and it's 100 years of service to the community:

Liz Bateman has passed away

Gasport and Middleport have lost a great citizen with the passing of Liz Bateman. She was a Middleport village trustee, a member of Tri-Town Ambulance and Zion Lutheran Church, a girl scout leader, a mission trip worker, and so much more! She was an excellent role model for local residents

Veratti has great yields

The New York Corn and Soybean Growers Association announced the winners of their yield contests for 2019. Congrats to Gasport's Verratti Farms for being a top producer!

In the corn yield contest, Verratti came in 3rd statewide with a yield of 263.72.

In the soybean contest they came in 2nd AND 3rd statewide due to different seed types. Verratti saw a yield of 76.40 with Channel crops and 74.56 with NK crops.

Impressive, especially when one considers how wet Gasport was in 2019!
