The Old Gray Goose has passed away
If you grew up in eastern Niagara County you know Old Gray Goose -- Robert Gray (http://www.oldgraygoose.com/old-gray-goose/). He was a regular at Camp Keenan and visited all the elementary schools to tell stories and lead kids in song. He passed away earlier today. RIP to a guy beloved by kids and adults alike. He was one of the good guys.
Place your sapling order
Every spring the Niagara County Soil & water Conservation District
sells DEC-raised saplings for local residents to plant for use in
conservation projects and lawns. Over 60,000 trees are
distributed across the county on an annual basis. The trees will be
available in late April but you have to order them before March 9th.
It's a really great program for two reasons...
1) It gives you access to many different species of trees and shrubs suitable for a wide variety of soil. So, there are trees available for any conservation project you may have like creating a hedgerow, planting foodstuff for birds & mammals, starting a woodlot, stifling erosion, improving your lawn and more.
2) It's cheap. You could never buy these types and amounts of trees from nurseries or online without paying an arm and a leg. These trees are a great buy.
The order form is available in their Winter 2018 newsletter which can be downloaded here:

Roy-Hart's graduation rate rises
The NYS Department of Education released statewide graduation rates reflecting the Class of 2017. Roy-Hart's graduation rate has risen significantly in recent years. In 2012 it was at 84%. Last year, it hit 96%. Statewide, the number was 82%. This improvement is a testament to, one, Roger Klatt's strengthening of intervention for students who have troublesome grades and, two, the teachers and aides who have provided that extra tutoring and help.

Buffalo News story about Ruthven Kill
Anne Neville of the Buffalo News wrote this wonderful article about the late Ruthven "Bud" Kill, a farmer, philosopher, and painter who painted pictures of my home and other scenes in the Gasport area during his retirement.
