Saturday marks the 30 year anniversary of the infamous chemical spill at FMC Middleport, which is forever ingrained as a memory in my Royalton-Hartland peers who were elementary school and high school students at that time in Middleport.
The schools were evacuated and 31 teachers and students received first aid or medical attention for eye irritation.
It became something of a sensation in both the local news and then in the national news a few weeks later because the exact same chemical that caused the chaos of that day was the same compound that killed 1,000 people in Bhopal, India that December.
Luckily for Middleport, it was only a 30-gallon spill.
