“The Twelve Tribes of Hattie” by Anaya Mathis Topic of July 28 Book Club Meeting
The
Royalton Hartland Book Club will discuss the plight of Hattie Shepherd,
the main character of “The Twelve Tribes of Hattie” by Anaya Mathis at
their Monday, July 28 meeting at 7 p.m. at the library, 9 Vernon Street
in Middleport.
The
story begins in 1923 when fifteen-year-old Hattie Shepherd leaves
Georgia to go north as part of “The Great Migration” that took place
between the 1910s and the 1960s. The fictional story tracks Hattie, one
of the 6 million African Americans that moved north during this
movement, as she settles in Philadelphia for what she hopes is a
brighter future. Hattie’s hopes fade as she experiences a series of
disappointments, all of which harden her resolve as well as the way she
raises her children.
This
Roylaton Hartland Book Club’s selection for their July meeting written
by first-time author Anaya Mathias’ has been named NPR’s Best Book of
the Year and a New York Times “Notable Book”.
The
members of the Royalton Hartland Book Club meet monthly to discuss a
wide number of literary selections and a variety of opinions and new
members are always welcome.
